Generally Ammonia and Nitrite will rise due to overfeeding, lack of regular water changes, inadequate filtration and a lack of live bacteria to break down the Ammonia and Nitrites. Another cause of rising Nitrite and and Ammonia levels is the non-use of Chlorine Neutraliser. When untreated tap water containing Chlorine and Chloramines enter the water, it kills off the beneficial bacteria that biologically breaks down the Ammonia.
